9 Ways to Experience Joy

  1. Buy experiences, not possessions. The anticipation of an experience can be as valuable a source of happiness as the experience itself. Memories of the experience can bring additional happiness.

  2. Focus on what you’re good at. Don’t spend your energy on things that are not your strength. Don’t try to fix yourself. When you focus on your strengths, you experience less depression and more happiness.

  3. Never sacrifice “Me Time”. Prioritize what brings you joy. Schedule it. You’re worth it!

  4. Rise above the difficult situation. Negative experiences can help us grow and learn. Instead of focusing on the “shoulda, coulda, woulda”, focus on what you learned. Don’t dwell on the past. You can’t change it. You can impact the future.

  5. Be generous with your time. Studies show, that doing things for other people you know, make you feel the happiest.

  6. Focus on your relationships with your spouse, family, and friends. Studies show that relationships with those you spend the most time with, will decline in quality over time. View these relationships as an objective third party. What do you observe?

  7. Watch a tearjerker movie. The sadness you feel while watching the tearjerker can make you appreciate what you have.

  8. Bring joy to your commute by riding your bike or walking to work. If that’s not an option, listen to your favorite music while you’re driving. Focus on what you’re thankful for.

  9. Smile anyway. Even if you’re wearing a mask, smiling can reduce your heartrate during stress.
