Setting New Year’s Goals that Stick

If you’re like many Americans, you make New Year’s Resolutions. Some of the most popular resolutions include:

Lose Weight and Get Fit. Quit Smoking.

Learn Something New.

Eat Healthier and Diet. Get Out of Debt and Save Money. Spend More Time with Family. Travel to New Places.

Be Less Stressed.

Unfortunately, New Year’s Resolutions, although well intended, rarely stick. The primary reason is they’re not specific enough. Secondly, resolutions often include failed accomplishments. Instead of focusing on things that we do well, we often focus on those tasks that we most struggle with. Not very motivating, to say the least! So, how do we break the resolution cycle, and create goals that actually stick?

When contemplating what you’d like to accomplish in the New Year, ask yourself these questions:

  1. What progress have I made in my life journey (i.e. health & wellness, career, family, finances)? How has that benefited me? How does that make me feel?

  2. Who are the people in my life that matter most? How has their support impacted my journey?

  3. What have I learned? What new habits have I created? How have these improved my life?

  4. What obstacles have I overcome? How is my life different as a result?

  5. What experiences or opportunities have I taken advantage of that have had an impact on my life today? What have I done that has made a difference in the lives of others?

Spending time reflecting on positive change and those things you’ve accomplished is a powerful exercise. It’s not about bragging and comparing yourself to others. It’s about acknowledging your own successes and channeling that understanding into creating an even better version of yourself. You’ll be surprised at the impact counting your successes has on your mood and your motivation. Before you know it, you’ll be well on your way to slaying your 2021 goals!
